ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for a Consultant Psychiatrist with forensic experience to be based in Palmerston North. The successful candidate will be working in a multidisciplinary team setting, providing high quality diagnosis, treatment and follow up of mental health consumers; assessing clients for the courts and NZ Parole Board and supporting the medical and psychiatric development of this service. Peer review, informal supervision and collegial support are provided.
The Central Regional Forensic Mental Health Service is the second largest provider of forensic mental health services in New Zealand. The Service covers 7 DHBs (Hawkes Bay, Tairawhiti, MidCentral, Whanganui, Capital & Coast, Hutt and Wairarapa). The Service operates at the interface between MHS and the Justice System and works within prisons, courts, community & inpatient settings. The service offers assessment and rehabilitation services to:
- Mentally disordered defendants charged with criminal offences
- Offenders who have psychiatric illness.
The inpatient services are primarily centred in Porirua (120 km from Palmerston North and 140 km from Wellington). These comprise acute medium secure provision (48 beds) and a rehabilitation/recovery step-down facility for four tangata whaiora/service users within the inpatient forensic system. There is a 15 bed medium secure unit in Whanganui which provides longer stay rehabilitation. The service also has access to 16 low secure and open beds as well as longer stay beds in the Rehabilitation Service and there is a close interface between the two services. We are the national provider for youth secure inpatient services and the Fixated Threat Assessment Centre New Zealand (FTACNZ).
There are 5 Regional adult forensic community teams which provide psychiatric care to prisons, courts and community clients and 2 Regional youth forensic community teams, which also cover Hawkes Bay prison Youth Unit and the Youth Justice facility at Palmerston North. There is close networking and communication across the Service between the inpatient and community forensic teams.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- FRANZCP or equivalent and be able to register for specialist registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ)
- Forensic psychiatry sub-speciality training preferred, but not essential
- Experience in forensic psychiatry and in working with inpatient and community Mental Health Services
- Ability to provide clinical leadership to other psychiatrists in the team & multidisciplinary setting
