New Zealand Customs Service| Te Mana Ārai o Aotearoa protects New Zealand's border using world class tools, world class people and innovative approaches. The Joint Border Analytics Centre (JBA) is a young team. that applies data science to help the NZ Customs Service make the right decisions to protect New Zealand's border. We work at all levels from policy and strategy through to the front line. With our analytical environment well established, we are looking to accelerate delivery by optimising how we present our data to our data scientists and analysts.

This is an exciting role where you will be responsible for designing and delivering a refined data layer that allows JBA analysts and data scientists to efficiently provide analytical solutions to business problems.
You will achieve this by architecting a data environment, modelling internal and external data, ingesting data into the environment and presenting the data so that it can be easily used. Data can be structured, semi-structured and unstructured. This may require a combination of relational and non-relational data structures. The data environment will need to support analytics development and a range of deployment options including real-time decision support.
You will work in partnership with Technical Specialists in the NZ Customs Nexus Data Warehouse Team and JBA business analysts and data scientists. In addition you will have a strong view on software engineering best practice that can deliver a data environment that is easy to use, easy to maintain and provides clear data lineage.
The salary range for this role is $101,125 - $129,447 per annum. Competent or mid-point is $114,411. This role predominantly works business hours Monday to Friday. You will report to the Chief Data Scientist and the role will preferably be based in Auckland or Wellington however we are open to candidates from other areas in New Zealand.

You will have:
- Proven ability to work well in and across multiple teams in a highly collaborative manner.
- Experience of data warehousing to support business intelligence and analytics solutions.
- A background and post-graduate qualification in Computer Science or other data centric profession preferred
- A passion for exploring/understanding data
- A track record of quickly understanding how real-world business processes are manifested in enterprise data
- The ability to visualise your data findings in a clear and easy to understand way and to capture corner cases of implementations
- Good understanding of relevant software development topics, including development languages, methodologies and other related areas (databases, integration technologies, scripting etc.).
- Sound knowledge of architectural and design techniques, industry standards and practices.
Central to this role is analysing and solving data related problems on behalf of JBA. Business acumen and being self-managing are essential attributes for this role.
Requirements to apply
You will need to obtain Confidential level national security clearance. In order to obtain this clearance you need to be a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in New Zealand for the last 5 years and resides in NZ at time of application;
OR a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided in New Zealand for the last 5 years and resides in NZ at time of application, but may have been absent from New Zealand for periods of six or more months within the past 5 years, preferably in one or more of the following countries: either Australia, Canada, UK or the USA. You will be required to provide overseas police certificates for these periods spent outside of New Zealand.
You must have a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service towards a recommendation of suitability for security clearance at a higher level. Already having Confidential clearance is a benefit, but not a requirement.
Due to the nature of Customs work you must have a clear Police record. Successful applicants are also required to pass a drug test.
