New Zealand Customs Service (Customs) | Te Mana Ārai o Aotearoa protects New Zealand against threats to the border. We have an exciting permanent opportunity on offer for a Human Resources Advisor to join the People and Capability team, this role will be based in either our Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch Customhouse.
To be part of the People and Capability team, we are looking for a real Go-Getter, someone that has previous experience working in an HR Generalist role and supporting people leaders in employment and disciplinary matters. You will thrive in a fast-paced environment and enjoy the challenge of providing quality and consistent advice and support to managers and employees. This is an important role, which requires a high level of relationship management. In addition, you will be confident, have excellent written and verbal communication skills and have strong attention to detail.
Some of the key duties of this role include, responding to general HR inquiries on topics which include the full breadth of the employee lifecycle, advising managers on HR policies and processes, assisting both people leaders and the HR Advisory team with employment relations issues and disciplinary cases, providing quality assurance on contract and letters and supporting the wider HR Advisory team.
Although based in either our Auckland Wellington or Christchurch Customhouse, you will be required to travel to the Domestic/International Airports and within NZ from time to time.
We would like to hear from you, if you have the following:
- 2-3 years' experience working as a generalist HR Advisor;
- Strong experience in supporting people leaders in the management of employment and disciplinary matters;
- Experience in a unionised working environment;
- Quick to pick up new systems and be proficient at using all applications within the Microsoft Office Suite;
- Ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders;
- HR qualification or similar level experience;
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to build strong and effective relationships;
- Attention to detail and problem solving skills;
- Experience in working in an operational environment would be an advantage.
To join Customs in any role you must be a New Zealand citizen or NZ permanent resident*.
(*) A New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in New Zealand for the last 5 years and resides in NZ at time of application;
OR a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided in New Zealand for the last 5 years and resides in NZ at time of application, but may have been absent from New Zealand for periods of six or more months within the past five years, preferably in one or more of the following countries: either Australia, Canada, UK or the USA. You will be required to provide overseas police certificates for these periods spent outside of New Zealand.
Applicants must have New Zealand Citizenship or have NZ Permanent Residency and be able to obtain and maintain an organisational security clearance. The successful applicant will also be required to pass an initial drug test.
Please be aware that the NZCS is currently consulting with employees and unions on a draft vaccination policy. A decision on the final policy will be made before Christmas.
The draft policy proposes that all NZCS employees be fully vaccinated by 11 February 2022. It is also proposed that all employees maintain the vaccination status required by Customs, as a condition of employment.
