The respiratory department of Capital and Coast District
Health Board is expanding and applications are invited for the position of
Respiratory specialist (Senior Medical Officer / Consultant) with an interest
in sleep medicine. The successful applicant(s) will join the existing team of 7
respiratory specialists, based at Wellington Hospital, in providing tertiary
services to the lower north island region of New Zealand and secondary services
to the greater Wellington region.
The role of the respiratory specialist is to provide diagnosis and management of people referred with respiratory disorders, provide training and take part in teaching of students and junior medical staff and other health groups and to provide services within the available resources.
Broadly, the work is diagnosis and management of people referred with respiratory and sleep disorders. A general respiratory background is required with ability to deal with a range of problems. Experience with endobronchial ultrasound would be an advantage but is not essential and a range of sub-specialist interests will be considered. A parallel advert is also being placed for a respiratory specialist with an interest in sleep medicine.

The Respiratory department at Wellington hospital is a friendly department with 7 Respiratory specialists with complementary sub-specialist interests. We share a respiratory inpatient roster, currently 1 week in 7. The 1 in 7 respiratory on-call roster has no general medicine commitment.
We have an excellent respiratory team, with good registrar and nursing support. There is a fully equipped pulmonary function laboratory on site performing simple and complex lung function testing, including cardio-pulmonary exercise testing. As a tertiary hospital we are well supported by other specialist services including cardiothoracic surgery and immunology.

must be registered or be eligible for registration as a Medical Specialist with
the Medical Council of New Zealand
- Can demonstrate a high degree of clinical skill, particularly in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine
- Have the ability to participate in the training and development of our Registrars.
