About the role:
The Corporate & Registries team provides general legal advice to all of MBIE's operations, including in relation to MBIE's 16 different regulatory systems. The team also provides advice on governance, integrity and conduct matters that touch the organisation. This creates opportunities for our lawyers to work in relation to a range of different regulatory systems and operational areas, depending on their experience and interest.
We have two opportunities available to join as a Solicitor or Senior Solicitor based in Wellington.
For the Solicitor position you will work with an initial regulatory focus on energy markets to ensure that New Zealand's focus on oil, gas, minerals and coal resources are effectively managed so that New Zealanders have secure, sufficient and affordable energy and resources to drive our economy and way of life. You will be enthusiastic and highly motivated and ideally have legal experience in the fields of privacy, OIA requests, information sharing, and/or regulatory compliance, as well as strong communication and relationship management skills.
For the senior solicitor role there is opportunity to work across MBIE’s regulatory systems with an initial regulatory focus on supporting those working within the Building & Construction system including occupational regulation. Ideally you will have experience in the fields of privacy, official information and regulatory compliance, as well as strong communication and relationship management skills.
Both roles will be working with other in-house counsel providing advice on a wide range of legal issues. You will need to be technically proficient, agile, adaptable and a strong communicator.
Salary range (depending on skills and experience:
Solicitor $70K - 110K
Senior Solicitor $112K - $138K
Skills and experience required:
To be successful in the role, you will need to have the following:
• Experience in public law and an understanding of the mechanisms of government
• Strong legal technical skills
• Well-developed written and verbal communication abilities, which allow you to convey key ideas and issues in a way that is suitable to the audience
• Strong relationship management skills and an ability to work well with others
• Enthusiasm, drive and a proactive nature
• A tertiary qualification in law and a practising certificate
Experience working in relation to one or more of MBIE’s 16 regulatory systems would be an advantage – for example, Accident Compensation, Building, Communications markets, Competition, Consumer and Commercial, Corporate Governance, Employment relations and standards, Energy markets, Immigration and/or Trade international and standards.
For the Senior Solicitor position:
• experience working on governance, integrity and conduct matters and / or regulatory compliance and enforcement
• the ability to lead assignments and to coach and mentor other team members
