Health Protection Officer at Waikato District Health Board (Hamilton), Waikato

The details: Fixed Term (6 Month), 80 hours per fortnight

About the role:

We are currently looking for someone to join our team of health protection officers based in Hamilton. Priority will be given to candidates who have gained their HPO designation.

You will be responsible for at least one geographic area within the Waikato District, due to this travel may be required.

 

What we need from you:

You will need to have a recognised qualification of a Health Protection Officer, e.g. a diploma in Environmental Health, and knowledge of relevant legislation and its interpretation and application as it relates to health protection activities. The ability to communicate with diverse peoples and cultures, organisations and/or consumer groups is vital. It’s desirable to have experience working with communities, local government and a variety of government agencies.

 

You will have the demonstrable ability to:

• Assess risk, problem solve and carry out decision-making in compliance with legislative provisions, (DHB) polices and guidance documents

• Work within both a regulatory and non-regulatory environment to ensure public health risks are identified and managed

• Be aware of the impact of decisions on key stakeholders and consults as appropriate utilising available resources

• Be proactive and effective when problem solving is required

• Communicate effectively, both written and oral

 

Please note that the Public Health Unit is currently heavily engaged in COVID-19 response work. All staff within the Unit are therefore not able to complete any of their usual ‘business as usual’ work. New staff being employed will be inducted into both their specific role and a COVID role eg: Case investigation

 

COVID-19:

The Waikato District Health Board Health & Safety has a policy that includes ensuring that you comply with the Health Order announced 11 October 2021 and with the Waikato DHB’s Vaccine Preventable Diseases for Employees policy. The policy prescribes the required vaccinations including COVID19 for all employees of Waikato DHB. COVID-19 vaccinations are mandatory before you commence employment.

The Waikato Public Health Unit is an important interface between the health sector and our communities in need. We strive to provide information, influence, intervention and prevention strategies that will improve the health and wellbeing of our population. Health Protection is charged with protecting and promoting public health with a focus on environmental health through risk assessment, risk mitigation and communication, with the support of legislation.
