The New Zealand Customs Service | Te Mana Ārai o Aotearoa protects New Zealand's border using world-class tools, world-class people and innovative approaches.
The Intelligence, Investigations and Enforcement (II&E) Group's mission is to protect the integrity of New Zealand's border system. Customs Maritime Unit is an operational unit within II&E, with teams based in both Auckland and Opua.
The Customs Maritime Unit is responsible for identifying, interdicting and mitigating risk in the maritime environment around New Zealand. Activities include air and seaborne patrols, surveillance and searching of vessels, engaging with key stakeholders (Border Protect) and contributing to maritime domain awareness. Key to success in this area is collaboration with partner agencies and the general public including through our Border Protect initiative.
We are seeking a highly motivated Chief Customs Officer, based in Auckland, who will lead teams to deliver keys outputs of maritime domain awareness, community engagement and the detection of illegal maritime activity.

You will be a leader who understands exploring opportunities to enhance efficiencies and effectiveness in and across work areas. You will have:
- an understanding of and experience in the Maritime domain
- experience leading operational teams
- well developed and effective verbal and written communication skills
- the ability to plan and deliver operational results
- a strategic perspective - experience in developing an area to meet future operational demands
- knowledge and understanding to ensure a safe work environment that is consistent with legislative and policy standards for Occupational Health and Safety
- experience in leading engagement across agencies and with public stakeholders across Aotearoa
- most importantly, a passion for the protection of Aotearoa
