Economist/Senior Economist, Strategy and Stakeholder relations at Financial Markets Authority, Auckland
Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role
At the FMA, the work you do counts. We lead better, fairer outcomes for investors, consumers, and New Zealanders. Our innovative people drive the evolution of the financial industry, influencing the market and effecting positive change. Our remit is expanding and evolving, which means we need new talent to develop and implement an integrated strategic framework.
We're looking for an intermediate-level Economist to join our Strategy team. This is an area of expansion for the FMA, which means this is a unique opportunity to influence how we build economic research and analysis into our regulatory approach.
He angitūtanga: The opportunity
This is the first Economist role we're appointing into our Strategy team. This means the successful candidate will play a key role in the continued development of our economic research and analytical capability to support the identification and prioritisation of regulatory risks and opportunities.
Responsibilities will include:
- Embedding economic principles (micro, macro and behavioural) to support the FMA's regulatory approach.
- Identifying and analysing trends, risks, and opportunities to the FMA's strategic objectives through ongoing environmental scanning of New Zealand and global financial markets.
- Building organisational awareness and raising the research and economic capability of the FMA.
You will be joining a genuinely supportive and influential team with a diverse set of skills, carry out interesting and impactful work, engage right across the FMA including with senior leadership, with the opportunity to directly influence how the FMA responds to emerging trends in financial markets.
He kōrero mōu: About you
The FMA is just beginning its investment in its economics capability, so being confident, self-motivated and a natural problem solver will be essential to success. This will be a technical role so strong analytics and research experience, preferably backed by a strong academic background, is essential. We're looking for:
- Experience in an economic, public policy, and/or regulatory role.
- An understanding of macro and micro-economic principles and their application to financial markets regulation.
- Experience using research skills, economic theory and empirical/modelling skills to answer strategic questions and present these insights to diverse groups.
- Understanding of New Zealand's financial services and markets, preferably with an understanding of our regulatory regime.
- Great communication, organising and planning skills.
If this role has piqued your interest, however you're at a more senior stage in your career, feel free to get in touch to express an interest as we will be expanding our economics capability in the coming months.
Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou: What we offer
The work we're involved in is as challenging as it is interesting. What's more, you'll be joining a supportive team culture working with people who love what they do. We offer a comprehensive induction programme and ongoing opportunities for professional development and continuous learning.
A strong emphasis is placed on your life outside the workplace, we support flexible working arrangements and offer a range of wellness and social activities, such as monthly drinks and wellbeing sessions - we even have our very own dedicated FunSquad who organise creative ways for all FMAers to connect and socialise.
