The Census is the official count of people in New Zealand, and the places in which they live. Census information is used by central government, councils, community groups, iwi and business to plan directly and indirectly. The Census Insights unit produces meaningful stories from the data collected. The Needs and Analysis, and Analysis Operations teams, look after the content and customer information needs, assess and report on the quality of Census data, and the Products and Services team looks after the dissemination of the data and producing products and services that make the data accessible to users. Multiple roles are available across these three teams.
Mō te tūnga | The role
Reporting to either the Manager Needs and Analysis, Analysis Operations, or Products and Services, you'll be passionate, interested and knowledgeable about social statistics and ideally census data, and the value it provides our customers including, but not limited to, central government, councils, community groups, iwi and Māori communities, and business.
You'll have the opportunity to be involved in multiple parts of the production process. You could be responsible for understanding and defining customer and data quality needs, analysing and assessing the quality of the 2023 Census data, or providing insight to the census data by sharing it in various products and services. As a part of your role, you will work with teams within the Census Programme and across Stats NZ. You will also mentor and give guidance to other analysts in the team.
This is a fixed term role until April 2024.
Mōu | About you
- Desire to apply your customer research skills to all aspects of our business process from need to validation and testing, to delivery
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills as you'll need to work across a range of stakeholders
- Have strong demonstrated analytical skills, and a talent for telling meaningful stories with data
- Be a team player, and experience mentoring and supporting others
- Experience in working to tight deadlines, good time management skills, and ability to adapt and respond to new information
- Familiarity with R, Power BI and SQL would be advantageous
- Knowledge/familiarity or a commitment to learning/understanding Te Ao Māori, in order to understand and contribute meaningful work and outcomes for Māori communities
- ·Relevant subject matter knowledge is desirable but not essential

Starting salary: $76,571 - $90,084 negotiable depending on the successful applicant's skills and experience.
