Unique opportunity for an experienced leader to play a critical part in enabling the Ministry to do great things in the world.
MFAT is the government’s lead source of advice on foreign and trade policy, and diplomatic and consular issues. Internationally, MFAT works to ensure that New Zealand’s security and economic interests are advanced and protected and the rights and safety of New Zealander’s abroad are protected.
The Security & Organisational Resilience Division is responsible for the provision of independent security advice to the Ministry to enable the protection of national security interests – people, classified material, facilities, systems and procedures.
As Divisional Manager Security & Organisational Resilience reporting to the Deputy Chief Executive, People and Operations you will lead the achievement of the division’s strategic priorities, policies and processes and, in conjunction with our Information Management Division (IMD) you will ensure that MFAT meets national and international standards as well as meeting the wider business needs.
In particular you will be responsible for:
- ensuring that there is a coherent strategy, framework, toolkit and policies to protect the Ministry’s people, assets and information at all MFAT locations around the world including through business continuity management
- working closely with other NZ security agencies and Government Departments
- providing people, policy and programme leadership, clear strategic direction and clear expectations of performance for the Security & Organisational Resilience Division
- operating as the Ministry’s principal advisor on our security policies and arrangements and supporting the leadership team and the Chief Executive to ensure the Ministry meets its strategic priorities.

We would like to hear from you if you are an experienced senior leader with the following skills and experience:
- Comprehensive working knowledge of security practice and legislation, including an understanding of the Protective Security Requirements (PSR).
- Demonstrable organisational business continuity, resilience and planning experience.
- Extensive experience leading the development and implementation of complex and/or high profile policy advice.
- A high level of leadership and management acumen, ideally across a range of people and operations functions, with an ability to bring out the best in others, including through coaching and development, to ensure jobs are done well and careers are advanced for the good of the organisation.
- Excellent relationship management skills both internally and externally to provide both direct leadership and influence on potential security risks and the threat environment.
- Sound understanding of tikanga and Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles.
