Waikato Hospital is a provider of secondary and tertiary health and disability services to the Waikato District and the wider Midland region. The population base for the Waikato areas is 350,000. The catchment for advanced trauma specialties in the broader Midland region is 890,000.

 

In 2022 the team will have a primary focus on multi-disciplinary trauma care and will provide an excellent opportunity for those interested in a career as a trauma surgeon and become proficient in all aspects of multidisciplinary trauma care. As well being involved acutely on the trauma call roster in working hours, elective and acute general surgery, including endoscopy and elective breast and colorectal surgery.

 

Honorary surgical lectureships may be available to suitable candidates via the Waikato Clinical School.  The Fellow forms an integral part of the Waikato Trauma Service that provides clinical care and advice to major trauma patients admitted to Waikato Hospital, and has close links to other hospitals in the Midland Region through the MTS. The Trauma Service maintains a detailed trauma registry and provides excellent learning and research opportunities. The Trauma Research Centre has an active research program that the trauma fellow will be involved in during the appointment.

 

The Fellow will be included in the after-hours registrar roster for general surgery, excluding night duty.

 

Applications are called from doctors who are registered with the New Zealand Medical Council and are qualified in general surgery to FRACS level or equivalent.
