Principal Advisor - Research & Analytics, Safety Camera System at New Zealand Transport Agency, Wellington

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

Waka Kotahi is busy working on effecting the transfer of the safety camera system from NZ Police to Waka Kotahi. Safety cameras are an important lever to reduce excessive speeds and ultimately reduce Deaths and Serious Injuries (DSIs) on New Zealand roads. This is an exciting and complex programme of work that contributes to achieving our Road to Zero objectives. This role provides a real opportunity to shape a new approach to safety cameras.

The Safety Camera System (SCS) Programme is responsible for leading the design and build for the safety camera transfer from NZ Police at the right time. We are now ready to onboard five key permanent roles to progress embedding this work across the agency, ensuring successful ongoing operation of the safety camera system at Waka Kotahi. The Principal Advisor, Research and Analytics role will lead and advise on key quantitative and qualitative insights which will guide safety camera system decisions. This critical role will ensure decisions are intelligence-led and based on good data and insights.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Research & Analytics, Corporate Support, you will also have a dotted reporting line to the Senior Manager, Safety Camera System in the Regulatory Services group, a newly established focal point role responsible for the overall safety camera ownership within Waka Kotahi. The Principal Advisor has strong links into the Programme team during the design and transfer of the safety camera function.

This is a key role responsible for contributing to shaping a new intelligence-led approach to the safety camera system within Waka Kotahi. If a challenge is what you are looking for this opportunity may be for you.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Experience working in a research, insights and analytics function in a large, complex organisation
  • Experience developing and implementing strategic roadmaps to grow the capability and impact of business intelligence, data and analytics
  • An ability to take a strategic approach and apply a system view to resolve complex issues.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent relationship management and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of road safety, safety cameras and automated compliance and enforcement would be desirable.

In addition, a relevant tertiary qualification, equivalent experience and/or professional certification/accreditation is required.

You will demonstrate knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an understanding of Te Ao Māori and promote tikanga and Te Reo Māori. You will also have knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an appreciation of te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) as it applies in the public sector.

The Corporate Support Group underpins everything Waka Kotahi does. They are an enabler, an advisor and the people who keep the Agency safe. Corporate Support includes Finance, Legal, Risk and Assurance, Research and Analytics, Procurement, and Enterprise Change. For the Agency to be successful, Corporate Support needs to deliver quality services efficiently.

The Research and Analytics team lead the design and development of fit for purpose research and analytics through strategic solutions and business intelligence tools and analytics that will identify opportunities that effect and support key decision making for Waka Kotahi, our partners and customers.
