Occupational Therapist / Kaiwhakaora Ngangahau (Intellectual Disability Service) at Capital & Coast District Health Board (Wellington), Kenepuru Hospital/Porirua

Service:  Intellectual Disability Service 

Contract:  Permanent, Full Time

Salary:  As per MECA

Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

The Occupational Therapy role is critical in the effective implementation of the service model of care. The nature of rehabilitation provided for these clients necessitates staff in these roles to provide active support, role modelling and coaching giving clients the opportunity to implement learned skills. The Occupational Therapist will provide assessment and intervention for clients in 1:1 and group settings. You will work with a group of Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy support workers across the Intellectual Disability Service.

Mō tō mātou rōpū - About our team

The Intellectual Disability Secure Services has regional and National services: 

  • Haumietiketike is a regional intellectual disability adult secure forensic unit which has 11 beds for. 
  • The Step-Down Rehabilitative Cottages include two separate houses providing four adult beds in each cottage. 
  • Hikitia Te Wairua is the National intellectual disability secure forensic unit for young people. This building is co-located with the Rangatahi (Youth Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit) and Nga Taiohi (National Secure Youth Forensic Unit).
  • Individualised Service Units (ISU) is a National facility for adults with an intellectual disability and/or mental illness who have conditions of such severity that they have been subject to long-term hospital level care compromising their quality of life.
  • RIDCAS is a regional community team providing consultation and liaison with both mental health and disability contracts.

Moū - About you

 Essential Professional Qualifications / Accreditations / Registrations:

  • Current practicing certificate
  • Registered Occupational Therapist

Experience:

  • An interest in working with intellectual disability and mental health service users.
  • Ability to work under guidance and according to treatment plans and guidelines developed.
  • Ability to make an effective unit / team contribution.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both written and oral. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Sensitive to the needs of service user, staff and the public.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Understanding of the needs of other cultures.
  • Strong service user focus.
  • Understanding of and adherence to C&C DHB-s aims and objectives
  • Knowledge of intellectual disability and mental illness is an advantage.

Other requirements:

  • A full driver-s licence
