Fellow - Thoracic Surgery

 

12 month fixed term

Start Date:  start date negotiable

 

Applications are invited for the position of Fellow, Thoracic Surgery at Waikato Hospital.

We  are  seeking  doctors  who  have  completed their cardiothoracic or general surgical training  and  have acquired speciality  fellowship or  its  equivalent and  who are  able  to   complete  routine  thoracic  procedures  independently. 

 

Waikato Hospital is a teaching hospital and a major tertiary referral centre providing specialised and emergency healthcare for ~ 900,000 people in the Midland and Waikato area.

 

The Waikato Cardiothoracic Unit, the second largest in the country, performs over 650 open heart procedures and around 200 thoracic procedures a year with an emphasis on minimally invasive surgery including uni and multiportal access.

 

The successful applicant will be required to:

  • manage thoracic surgery outpatients and  inpatients in the  Cardiothoracic Surgery Department under the supervision of the  Cardiothoracic  Surgeon
  • undertake clinical duties as  directed by the Head of Department, Cardiothoracic Surgery
  • participate  in  departmental  meetings, thoracic surgical audit and  be involved  in  teaching  and  service  development
  • conduct  research and  quality  improvement  projects

 

The fellowship provides experience in various aspects of adult thoracic surgery including oncological management of malignancies of the thorax, and benign diseases of the chest. Endobronchial procedures and thoracic trauma are included.

 

The fellow oversees and guides registrars in the day to day postoperative care of thoracic surgery patients.

 

Fellows in this program are expected to involve themselves in divisional research activities, and prepare presentations for research events.

  2. safety check under the  Vulnerable   Children  Act 2014
