Registered Nurse at Waikato District Health Board (Hamilton), Waikato

Where you’ll be working: Thames Inpatient Unit, Thames Hospital

The details: Permanent and part time positions available, rostered

 

The inpatient unit at Thames Hospital has 48beds made of general medicine, rehabilitation, surgery and mental health.

The IPU has a high acuity room with three beds, two of which are hard monitored.

The Rehabilitation unit has 10 beds. These patients are nursing using the principles of rehabilitation and have a longer length of stay than medical patients. Surgical patients are usually day cases, although there are times patients are admitted overnight. Piri ki te kainga is a step up / step down unit of 4 mental health beds.

There are times when you will be expected to work in other areas of Thames Hospital, including the Emergency Dept or as an ambulance transfer RN.

The patients we look after, have multiple health conditions in a rural secondary care setting. There is a strong multidisciplinary approach to care and proactive discharge planning. Patients requiring tertiary level specialised care are transferred to Waikato Hospital.

The positions available are permanent. The positions are part time, rostered and rotating shifts including night duty and you will be expected to work in the high acuity room within six months of commencing the position. There are frequently opportunities to do extra shifts, although this is not guaranteed.

 

Following is the skill set required for a nurse to work in the inpatient unit:

• Uses critical thinking as the base for making sound nursing judgements to comprehensively assess the complex health needs of our patients to develop and implement a plan of health care which is evidenced based.

• Integrate nursing knowledge, seeks new learning opportunities and uses a problem solving approach

• Works as a team player with all professional groups and is flexible enough to have the ability to work extra at reasonably short notice.

• A positive attitude to hard work and quality improvement focus that looks for opportunities to improve systems and processes.

• Preferable for 2 years recent experience, although RN 2 should apply.

• Prefer although not essential that at least one year working within the NZ health system.

• Preference will be given to the RN who has skills and expertise to management of BiPAP, the unstable diabetic patient and have basic cardiac rhythm interpretation ability.
