Registered Nurse, Auckland Regional Forensic Psychiatry Service, Northland Prison Team at Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand Waitematā, Northland
Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role
A great opportunity for a Registered Nurse with mental health experience who enjoys working in a challenging new environment
Do you want a new direction in mental health nursing that is not in a hospital or the community? Forensic Prison Team could be the right role for you.
Keep your weekends free! Hours of work, Monday-Friday 0800-1630 hours
We work in the Northern Regional Corrections Facilities (Auckland/Northland). It's interesting, every day is different, and you interact with Custody staff, prison Health staff, Police and lawyers on a daily basis who do value your expertise
Auckland Regional Forensic Psychiatry Services is now recruiting for a Registered Nurse to join our Forensic prison Team based in Northland.
As a key member of the Forensic Service, you will be working in Northland Regional Corrections Facility advising on issues related to an offender’s current mental health. This is a different and challenging role to traditional mental health nursing. We provide mental health triage assessments for prisoners referred from Ara Poutama staff and Health staff and follow up care to a caseload of prisoners with serious or suspected serious mental illness. Offenders often have complex mental health needs and the role involves working with these men in the custody environment as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
This role requires excellent assessment skills and experience with implementing interventions which enhance prisoner’s mental health outcomes. The ability to manage relationships with multiple stakeholders would also be an important aspect of the role including general mental health services.
We are a small team based at Kamo CMHS offices and we drive to NRCF site Monday--Friday. The rest of the Forensic Prison Team is based at Mason Clinic in Auckland. You will work collaboratively with an MDT along with Ara Poutama health ,Mental health staff and custodial staff. Support from other professional disciplines (social, cultural and psychological) will be available from the wider Forensic team located in Auckland.
There would be an opportunity to be trained and appointed as a Duly Authorised Officer as it relates to the Mental Health Act after a period of experience within the team. The DAO role attracts an extra allowance of $2700+ per annum.
So, if you would like to work autonomously (within the bounds of a multi-disciplinary team), are confident in your verbal and written communication skills, have mental health experience and ready for a new challenge, this could be the time for a change. This is a role that is highly valued by our Ara Poutama colleagues and mental health professionals alike.
To be successful in this role you will need:
- To be a Registered Mental Health Nurse with a current APC,
- Two years’ experience employed in mental health,
- Be able to develop positive relationships with a variety of people in different organisations,
- Be willing to learn new skills and develop professionally,
- Have strong clinical, interpersonal and relationship skills,
- Organise your caseload so that clients are seen in a timely manner,
- Hold a current full driver’s licence
The hours of work are 0800-1630 hrs Monday to Friday. Weekends and public holidays off.
