The Department of Urology at the Te Toka Tumai Auckland invites applications for a 12-month Fellowship position under the supervision of Dr Andrew Lienert, Service Clinical Director of Urology.
Auckland City Hospital is a large comprehensive public hospital in the centre of Auckland providing a wide range of tertiary services. The hospital is under the auspices of Te Toka Tumai Auckland, which employs over 10,000 healthcare workers, and is the largest clinical training institution in New Zealand.
The Urology Department at Auckland City Hospital provides a secondary service for the population of Auckland City and Counties Manukau as well as tertiary service for the greater Auckland region. Auckland City Hospital is also the regional service for all acute admissions. The Department has major interests in oncology, endourology, and reconstructive urology. The service carries out a very high volume of acute and elective stone work (including PCNLs) - the largest in Australasia. Our service also provides complex reconstructive and functional urology for our patients; we have two Urologists who specialise in this work.
This position will encompass a mixture of clinical work, teaching, and research and will provide a significant learning opportunity for a surgical graduate to further their clinical skills in Urology. Clinical activities include:
- Weekly operating lists across both Auckland City Hospital and Greenlane Surgical Unit
- Daily ward rounds
- Weekly MDM meeting
- Weekly general outpatient clinic including procedural clinics
- On call duties as rostered (back up to Junior Registrar)
Our surgical procedures include:
- All general endo-urology including TURP, HOLEP, high volume PCNL (supine and prone, using ShockPulse™ with training in surgeon-led percutaneous access)
- Open and laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (3D HD laparoscopy)
- Laparoscopic radical and partial nephrectomy, laparoscopic pyeloplasty
- Radical cystectomy, RPLND, complex open renal surgery for advanced cancer
- Collaboration with the Renal Transplant Surgery
- Pelvic exenteration
- Reconstructive urology including complex single and multi-stage urethral reconstruction, male sling and artificial sphincter implantation
- Neuro-urology and spinal patient reconstructive urology
- High volume acute operative urology as the acute centre for the greater Auckland area
The Auckland DHB Urology Department is a large high volume unit with a broad skill mix amongst our Urologists. The successful candidate will be able to enjoy a challenging and fulfilling year in our unit and significantly advance their skillset in areas of their choice.
