Mō tātou Ratonga | About our Service

Waikato Hospital is a large tertiary referral and teaching hospital, covering all medical and surgical specialties, including some secondary and tertiary paediatric services, neurosurgery, and the second largest cardiac surgery centre in New Zealand.

We are at the centre of a regional referral network across the middle of the North Island, including five medium-sized, and a number of smaller hospitals. Waikato Hospital is a Regional Burns Unit within the National Burns Service, and an accredited Trauma Centre. Retrieval of critically-ill patients is part of our mandate.

We now have over 4000 admissions a year to the ICU and HDU under the direction of the leadership group for the Department of Critical Care. The Department has a long and strong history, with formal establishment of an ICU in the early 1960’s following ad hoc use of ventilatory support through the late 1950’s. The Department has also, over time, acquired a reputation for lean Intensivist staffing relative to the workload. This philosophy has changed, and funding is already there to accomplish this.

The unit is credentialed by the College of Critical Care Medicine at level C24. The role is supported by 19 registrars (including 6 Advanced Registrars) covering 24/7. We currently employ 1 Fellow, but plan to recruit up to 3 Fellows. The nursing team is well developed with 24/7 senior nurse cover.

As we look to the future we have both planned and pre-funded major changes to make in service configuration, but also opportunities to refine these changes. Our first priority is to recruit sufficient Intensivists to cover 24/7 to be able to cover 22 ICU beds. A full-time Project Manager and Recruitment Officer, to help achieve this result, have already been appointed.

Although Hamilton flies under the radar as a city, it has much to offer, from proximity to beaches and world class surfing (30 minutes away in Raglan, 80 minutes to Mount Maunganui), to world class skiing, fishing, hunting and adventure sports. You can work in one of Australasia’s biggest units and live in the country or alongside one of our world class attractions like the Waikato River, and best of all, spend very little time getting from one to the other.
