The Starship Respiratory Department provides specialist respiratory paediatric care for children across New Zealand with complex or severe lung problems. For the vast majority of children we see, this care is provided in conjunction with a local general paediatric specialist.
Respiratory Services have specialised knowledge and skills in the investigation, diagnosis and treatment of children’s chest and lung problems.
An opportunity has risen for a Nurse Specialist in Respiratory Services within the Bronchiectasis portfolio focused on equity where you will foster the provision of positive outcomes and experiences for tamariki and their whanau by having a focus on equity.
Bronchiectasis is a chronic lung disease that can occur at any age (mean age of diagnosis in the Starship cohort is 3.8yrs). It can be heralded by intermittent or chronic wet cough, and acute respiratory infections. Without treatment the disease can be progressive, leading to breathlessness and deteriorating lung function. At its most severe, bronchiectasis can cause respiratory failure and death.
The Nurse Specialist is an expert in assessment skills, diagnostic reasoning, knowledge of management options and monitoring underpin practice. This role has specialist knowledge of complex conditions which is central to the role. Case management and coordination of the patient and their whānau with health professionals and inpatient areas is integral.

Nga Pūkenga Motuhake | Important Skills
To be successful you will:
- Have NZ Nursing Registration with a current Annual Practicing Certificate
- Be legally entitled to work in New Zealand
- Have Postgraduate certificate/diploma in specialty nursing practice
- Have Project management experience
- Have minimum level 4 practice
- Demonstrate knowledge of nursing professional development issues
- Have a Masters degree in nursing or health related area (Desired)
- Have at least 5 years of nursing experience (Desired)
- Have experience in a Paediatric and/or Respiratory setting (Desired)
