Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role
The Plastic Surgery Outpatients Department is part of a regional service and encompasses Palmerston North, Hawke - s Bay, Whanganui, Wellington and the Nelson Marlborough region. Clinicians attend clinics at the majority of these sites.
The plastic surgery service is very diverse and patients attend the outpatients setting for a variety of conditions. This position support an effective practice environment through providing clinical and professional nursing that supports the clinicians. The role requires you to be able to organise, prepare and run clinics, including a nurse led dressing clinic, where wounds are assessed and treated appropriately. The role requires you to assist with local anaesthetic procedures, the majority of which from February / March onwards will be in the Procedure Suite located directly above the plastic outpatient area. You will need to be able to easily build rapport with patients, clinicians and other staff to achieve quality outcomes for patients. This will represent half of this role.
The other half of this role while still being based in the plastic outpatient area, will be one of a research nurse working in conjunction with the Gillies McIndoe Research Institute (GMRI). The appointee will assists the GMRI in recruiting tissue and blood samples from patients undergoing surgery and to build up the GMRI tissue bank (GMRITB). This involves the identification of potential participants, interactions with patients and their families by education and promotion of the vision and aims of GMRI and of obtaining informed consent. You will liaise with surgeons, anaesthetists and the staff in the operating theatre in hospital and other health facilities. The appointee will maintain and manage the clinical database for head and neck and vascular anomaly patients and will also coordinate GMRITB Governance Committee meeting and may help with clinical trials.
The schedule for both these roles while being a full time role will be outlined so clarity about the roles and rostering are clear to all.

You will be joining a small team of established and experienced nurses and a health care assistant who, whilst working autonomously, are also very supportive and work together as a team to ensure safe delivery of care. We also work closely with the team of medical secretaries and two receptionists in the department. There are also nurse specialists who specialise in various aspects of the Plastic Surgical service.
Within the department we have a dressing clinic running daily, as well as local anaesthetic procedures throughout the week. General and Speciality clinics take place in the department and also in regional areas from Hawkes Bay/Palmerston North down to Nelson, Marlborough.
We are a fun, dynamic and supportive team and would love for someone of similar nature to join the team. There will be interface and support from the chief scientist, staff and students of the GMRI and the Executive Director who is a plastic surgeon working at Hutt Hospital.
Moū - About you
Qualifications, skills and experience include
- Current NZ registration and practising certificate
- 2 years post grad surgical experience
- Experience in Plastics Surgery and/or theatre desirable
- An interest in research is essential as is the ability to manage databases (Access)
The ability to provide day to day nursing support to consultants, registrars, clinics and outpatient services, along with excellent communication is essential
