Te whiwhinga mahi | The Opportunity
We have an active Ultrasound programme, employing one of only a few DDU holders in NZ. The POCUS Fellowship programme is a new initiative for 2022/23, aiming to upskill both individuals and the department as a whole and to provide an ED POCUS service during office hours. We have multiple FACEMs with post graduate qualifications in POCUS and perform a wide range of scans.
Successful candidates will work a mixture of ED and dedicated POCUS scanning shifts; flexible and part time hours are considered. Fellows will gain the opportunity for one on one tutoring with ED sonologists and expert sonographers in the Waikato Hospital Ultrasound department. Support and supervision is provided for a range of post graduate POCUS qualifications including the ASUM CCPU and DDU.
Our medical roster provides SMO cover 18 hours a day, 7 days a week, with a minimum of 3 SMOs on each shift. You will enjoy working as part of a team, and enjoy supervising the junior staff. We also provide some support to the rural EDs in the DHB; sessional appointments across more than one site are available.
Joining a friendly and dynamic team of 25 Emergency Physicians providing care to all patients. You will enjoy working in a multidisciplinary team environment. Clinical support duties are varied, with a wide range of opportunities, including the chance to participate on a broad level if desired - one of our team has recently been the ACEM president, and another has been a NZ representative on the International Resuscitation Council.

We provide Emergency Medicine to about 90,000 people per year, or 220- 250 a day. Our ED is the primary Emergency Medicine service for about 300,000 people based in Hamilton and the surrounding district, secondary for the entire Waikato DHB region (500,000 people), and a tertiary centre for the Te Manawa Taki region (1 million people, stretching from East Cape to Taranaki, and Coromandel to Mt Ruapehu). We admit to a hospital campus with all subspecialties, including Plastics, Psychiatry, Cardiothoracic and Neurosurgery, with over 600 beds on site

This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a high performing team. The successful candidates can be either post exam Advanced ACEM Trainees or Fellows of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM), or hold an equivalent specialist qualification in Emergency Medicine. 6-12 month roles are available.
We would love to hear from candidates who are interested in being involved in emergency medicine care, education and research, and keen to face the daily clinical challenges that come from working in our vibrant and busy ED.
Qualities that will help you succeed:
- A desire to practice medicine in a multidisciplinary team environment, including teaching and lifelong learning
- A well rounded background in Emergency Medicine, hold FACEM or global equivalent.
- Ability to self-motivate and deliver on outcomes
- Be eligible for an Annual Practising Certificate and vocational scope of Emergency Medicine with the Medical Council of New Zealand.

The salary for this position is based on the current Senior Medical and Dental Officer collective agreement dependent on skills, experience, and vocational registration in NZ. Meca | ASMS
