A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen for a registered Medical Laboratory Scientist to fill a senior position within our Cytogenetics team at Waikato Hospital, Hamilton. This position would suit a scientist with proven cytogenetics experience who is looking to move into a senior role or current leader looking for a change. The applicant chosen will help lead our small, dedicated team alongside our current technical specialist in providing a constitutional and acquired diagnostic genetics service. Waikato Hospital Laboratory services a wide region providing predominantly postnatal, Fluorescence In Situ Hybridisation (FISH/FFPE) and haematological cytogenetic testing. 

This fulltime, permanent role requires a scientist who is passionate about growing others through leadership and mentoring. Specialist knowledge of cytogenetics techniques such as peripheral blood and bone marrow karyotyping and FISH is essential. Knowledge of the currently used Metasystems digital analysis system would be an advantage. Opportunities for ongoing development exist and will be supported. With a move to a new, open plan laboratory due to take place in 2023, this is an opportune time to share knowledge and contribute to the upcoming changes.

Required skills & experience you will need to be considered for this role:

• Knowledge and understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi

• Minimum 5 years’ cytogenetics experience with excellent scientific and technical knowledge

• Hold registration or be eligible to register with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand (mscouncil.org.nz)

• Excellent organisational skills with attention to detail

• Be quality focused and committed to providing good patient service

• Passionate about innovation and technology

• Strong interpersonal skills

• A desire to share learning and grow others
