Consultant Psychiatrist - Intellectual Disability Services at Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand Capital, Coast & Hutt Valley, Kenepuru Hospital/Porirua

Location:  Ratonga Rua-o-Porirua Campus, Porirua

Service:    The Mental Health, Addiction and Intellectual Disability Service (MHAIDS), Intellectual Disability Service 

Contract:  Permanent, part time - 12 hours p/w (there may be other part-time roles available within MHAIDS that can be combined to make full time employment)

Salary:      As per ASMS MECA

Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

The role sits in the Intellectual Disability Service working within inpatient and/or the community team. The Consultant Psychiatrist is responsible for providing high quality diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of clients and ensuring that all clinical steps necessary are taken to assist clients to achieve optimal health, wellbeing and safety through the provision of appropriate assessment, intervention and education. 

The appointee will be expected to travel within parts of the central region as required to fulfil the training and consultation aspects of the regional team. Peer review, supervision and collegial support are provided. There are also opportunities for teaching registrars.

You would be working across the adult part of our service, Regional Intellectual Disability Secure Service (RIDSS)/and Individualised Service unit (ISU). 

Moū - About you

  • Vocationally registered in Psychiatry with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ)
  • FRANZCP or equivalent qualification and be able to register for vocational registration with the MCNZ
  • Provide assessment, diagnosis and treatment for people presenting with a diverse range of mental and physical health challenges
  • Work in collaboration with multidisciplinary team
  • Able to provide consistently high standards of medical care
  • Has extensive knowledge of intellectual disability service delivery
  • Relevant experience and training

The Mental Health, Addiction and Intellectual Disability Service (MHAIDS) spans three DHBs - Wairarapa, Hutt Valley and Capital and Coast DHB - s and includes local, regional, and national services. The local MHAIDS services are provided from multiple sites within the 3DHB sub-region - greater Wellington, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa. Te Korowai Whariki services include regional forensic and rehabilitation services covering the Central region while the intellectual disability services extend the length and breadth of the country from six bases located in Whangarei, Auckland, Cambridge, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin.

Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley district is located centrally in Wellington and has over 6,000 full-time equivalent staff, making us one of the major employers in the Wellington region. We operate three hospitals -  Wellington Regional Hospital in Newtown, Hutt Valley Hospital and Kenepuru Hospital in Porirua  - as well as the Kāpiti Health Centre at Paraparaumu.
