Te tūnga | The role
As a General Manager you are part of Stats NZ's Senior Leadership Team who are responsible for the day-to-day running of the organisation. You will report the Deputy Government Statistician/Deputy Chief Executive (DGS/DCE) for Data System Leadership and lead the Data Services branch of 60+ staff with 5-7 direct reports. Data Services provide access to critical data assets used by researchers, iwi and Māori organisations, government agencies, non-government organisations and others involved in the data system. This includes leadership of our integrated data programme, provision of customised data requests and management of Stats NZ's Information Centre.
You will bring strong system leadership and strategic thinking to the role. The Data Services branch has a leadership role across the data system to improve the quality of key datasets used for research, policy evaluation, and advice to Government. This requires high levels of strategic thinking, the ability to build relationships at senior levels inside and outside of government, and the ability to influence outcomes to improve the functioning of the NZ data system.
You will need to create a high-performance team culture within your branch, collaborate with your peers across the group and wider organisation, and foster long-term relationships with key external networks to deliver value. Your key customers will be senior leaders in government agencies, Māori, iwi and hapū, and researchers who access data held by Stats NZ.
You will be a critical part of the Data System Leadership senior leadership team and contribute strongly to our broader system leadership role. We would welcome your unique addition to the way we learn from each other, challenge each other, and build each other up. We work hard to create a safe, fun and supportive group.
