Te whiwhinga mahi | The Opportunity
The Starship Respiratory Physiology Laboratory is a combined Respiratory and Sleep physiology laboratory supporting a tertiary paediatric respiratory service with considerable national activity. In consequence, referred patients tend to have complex and severe chronic respiratory / sleep disorders necessitating highly specialized and broad needs for assessment and management.
We have a permanent full-time role available within the Starship Respiratory and Sleep Service, for an experienced Clinical Physiologist which specifically involves the clinical practice, quality assurance and teaching of but not limited to:
- Respiratory physiology assessment (lung function testing)
- Exercise testing
- Sleep physiology assessment (level 1-4 sleep studies)
- Long-term CPAP, non-invasive and invasive ventilation
The primary purpose of the role is but not limited to providing accountability for facilitating the professional and practice standards, ensuring physiology staff safely and effectively meet the clinical physiology care needs of tamariki and their whanau; may assist in day-to-day management of the Starship Respiratory and Sleep Physiology Services in support of reporting manager; assist in the support of junior staff to achieve full physiology registration, supporting their professional development and participate in research projects and clinical trials.

To be successful in this role, you will require a high level of technical and clinical competency in both a laboratory (diagnostic) setting and within the clinical outpatient environment. Excellent professional conduct and communication is essential at all times, and initiative and flexibility are vital aspects to working within this small but busy team. Continuing education remains a vital aspect to sleep medicine, and continued professional development as required by the role and relevant registration body is essential.
Apart from the above, below are essential skills required
- Relevant NZQA Level 8 in addition to entry level qualification; or actively working towards Level 9 qualification or equivalent
- Current NZ Clinical Physiology Registration Board (CPRB) Registration and Annual Practicing Certificate (Sleep and/or Respiratory Physiology)
- Preferably six+ years practicing in sleep and respiratory, including experience in a paediatric setting
- Highly developed specialist practical and theoretical knowledge within specialty/subspecialty areas including knowledge of all modalities in the specialty area
- An ability to carry out duties independently and adapt to and work around unexpected changes and circumstances
- Provision of liaison and consultation on specialist field of child mental health knowledge to paediatric health professionals and multidisciplinary teams in Starship Hospital, schools, agencies and patient groups as indicated.
