DevOps Engineer at New Zealand Customs Service, Wellington

We have a permanent full-time opportunity on offer for a DevOps Engineer. This role will report to the Product Manager, Engineering and will be based in our Wellington Customhouse. 

This exciting position will provide DevOps Engineering technical support to Information Services Towers including the development of software fixes to integrate IS systems. The DevOps Engineer will ensure that software used to support the development of software is properly established and supported. This includes (but is not limited to) source code and artefact repositories, software build and deployment tools, software inspection tools and defect management tools. 

To be successful as a DevOps Engineer, the appointee requires the following knowledge, skills and experience:

  • Experience working with Azure and kubernetes;
  • Development experience in any language(s) (more the better), and a passion for code;
  • Good technical knowledge of infrastructure and software technologies (including but not limited to, operating systems, integration tools and software development and support tools);
  • A good, amount of initiative, and the ability to take a solo piece of work and be able to take it through to completion. While being able to help peer review other work, and give and take constructive criticism and input;
  • Knowledge or experience with agile methodologies, kanban etc;
  • Someone with the right attitude, someone who wants to be part of a great team, who is keen to learn and enjoys having input;
  • Good communication skills, written, spoken and presenting, and documentation.

To join Customs in any role you must be a New Zealand citizen or NZ permanent resident* and be able to obtain and maintain a Confidential security clearance. The successful applicant will also be required to pass an initial drug test.

(*) A New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in New Zealand for the last 5 years and resides in NZ at time of application;

OR a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided in New Zealand for the last 5 years and resides in NZ at time of application, but may have been absent from New Zealand for periods of six or more months within the past five years, preferably in one or more of the following countries: either Australia, Canada, UK or the USA. You will be required to provide overseas police certificates for these periods spent outside of New Zealand.
