We have Customs Officer roles based at Christchurch airport. As a Customs Officer you'll bring high levels of integrity, honesty and discretion. You'll interact and communicate with a wide range of people and ensure a quality customer experience.
About this role | Mō tēnei tūranga mahi
You'll be part of a close knit team. Being in our deployment model, typically you will start at the airport and move around different operational locations / areas every couple of years. Areas include inspections, CCA team, service delivery and the marine team. Even if you are not deployed to these areas, you will have the opportunity to learn about them.
Work areas are located around Christchurch International Airport and Custom House on Orchard Road, except for the marine team which works at the Port of Lyttelton.
Shift pattern is 6 days on 3 days off incorporating revolving shifts when working at the airport, Lyttelton and the COG. For other operational areas, these operate on standard hours of Monday to Friday.
Salary starts at $54,068 per annum and on top of that you will receive an Hours of Work allowance of $12,894 per annum.
Please note as part of this intake we may also have Customs Officers (Variable hours) roles available - Covering the international flight schedule in and out of Christchurch, there are a variety of shift patterns including nights, weekends and public holidays. No one week will be same! Your hours will fluctuate between seasons and in accordance with flight schedules. For the Customs officer, Variable Hours role, your hours of work will vary between 40 and 80 hours per pay period/fortnightly (including approved annual leave). This variable hours role will see you working across a range of functions in the Customs airport environment.

We'll train you for the job - and once you've successfully completed training you'll be:
- Facilitating passengers and goods in and out of NZ, note taking, writing reports and entering information into our electronic systems;
- Questioning passengers and undertaking activities such as searching baggage;
- Processing passengers through Customs processes, this might have you sitting in a booth for long periods of time or standing up for long periods of time assisting passengers;
- Ensuring passengers meet immigration requirements and knowing when to escalate situations.
- Inspecting goods, packages at our inspections facility
- Being part of our CCA team who regularly go out and engage with stakeholders, businesses and others who work in the freight environment, educating and advising on Customs' core functions.
- Working in our contact centre for Service Delivery - answering customers queries, processing trade transactions/clearances
- Conducting Customs activities at the Port of Lyttelton including inspecting cargo, immigrating passengers etc

- A full unrestricted driver's license
- Great interpersonal communication skills (including good written skills)
- Be willing to work a shift pattern (including unsociable hours) as a core part of the role;
- Be able to achieve and maintain an organisational security clearance
- Have a good level of fitness and physical ability so you can complete the full range of duties in the role.
Successful candidates will be required to pass a pre-employment medical assessment, security check and drug test.

To join Te Mana Ārai o Aotearoa in any role you must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident*. Due to the nature of Customs' work all candidates must have a clear Police record. Security clearances are mandatory and are conducted by Customs. Due to the nature of this work, you must be able to obtain and maintain organisational clearance.
(*) You need to have continuously resided in New Zealand for the last 5 years and 5 years ago from the date of this application. If you haven't we may not be able to progress your application.
If you have lived in one or more of the following countries: Australia, Canada, United Kingdom or United States for short periods of time ie <6 months and are able to obtain Police Certificates for the period/s of your absence you may still be eligible.
You must have a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service towards a recommendation of suitability for security clearance at a higher level.
