Librarian at Department of Internal Affairs, Auckland

The National Library, Services to Schools is one of the entities within Te Haumi - Enterprise Partnerships within the Department of Internal Affairs. We support and enable reading engagement and learning in schools and kura kaupapa throughout Aotearoa. Our staff are experts in their field, providing knowledge, expert advice and access to a vast range of learning and reading resources.

We have two opportunities:
A full time permanent role and, due to a secondment within our team, a fixed term full time role ending May 2024.

The Reading Services librarian is responsible for providing learning resources and information services to schools including:

  • Curating and preparing loans in response to individual school requests received throughout the year
  • Supporting reading engagement initiatives for school communities
  • The provision of online reference services for students through Any Questions
  • Actively maintaining the Services to Schools collections including acquisition of new materials and ongoing assessment of the current collection within prescribed guidelines

We are looking for someone with:

  • Knowledge and passion for children's literature, and both print and online learning resources to support learning and literacy in schools
  • Experience working in the education sector, or a library where tamariki and their whanau are the primary focus
  • An understanding of the importance of reading and enjoys reading
  • An understanding of the New Zealand school curriculum
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage with staff in schools and kura kaupapa
  • An ability to show initiative, solve problems and work positively in a team environment
  • Well-developed digital literacy, a willingness to learn new skills
  • A positive attitude, adaptable, energetic, a sense of humour and has an excellent work ethic
  • Knowledge of Te reo Māori, tikanga Māori and/or Pasifika languages would be an advantage
  • A library or teaching qualification, or commensurate experience required
