Te Whatu Ora, Health New Zealand, leads the day-to-day running of our health system across New Zealand, with functions delivered at local, district, regional and national levels. Mō te tūnga | About the Role
The Intensive Care Service includes:
- Intensive & High Dependency Care, providing tertiary trauma, neurosurgery, cardiac surgery, spinal care, and a large variety of general surgical and medical care as well as paediatrics
- Deteriorating Patient Outreach Service, that supports wards across Christchurch Hospital Campus
- Canterbury Air Retrieval Service, that supports the South Island Region
The Christchurch Hospital ICU has completed a migration to a new 48 bed, 4 ICU Pod facility. The Intensive Care Service currently operates in 2 ICU pods (24 physical beds). A 3rd, 12 bed ICU Pod will be operational in August 2023.

We are looking for a Locum Intensive Care Specialist (up to 24 months), with broad general experience. If you are a newly qualified Specialist looking to broaden your skills or a Specialist with broad skills who now wishes to apply them in a new setting, then we want to hear from you. Experience caring for COVID patients, Paediatrics, Trauma, Neurosurgery and or Cardiothoracic Intensive Care is desirable but not essential.
Duties will include the assessment and management of critically ill and or injured patients referred to the Department of Intensive Care and assisting in the supervision of medical and other staff.
In addition, you will be required to participate in the Deteriorating Patient Outreach roster across the Christchurch Campus and the Air Retrieval roster.
The successful applicants must be eligible for
registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand and able to obtain a New
Zealand work visa.
