Hospitals are here to help people, but it takes a great team beyond the clinical staff to keep things running smoothly and ensure everyone is well looked after. Here at Nelson Hospital an important part of making this happen relies on having an awesome Patient Support & Security team on site at all times. And that - s where we think you could have a great role to play.
We are looking for a person who can assist our teams to ensure that we continue to provide a welcoming and safe environment primarily for the Inpatient Mental Health Unit (Wahi Oranga) at Nelson Hosptial. As a Patient Support and Security Worker you will focus on working with staff to best meet the needs of patients and their whānau accessing our services.
Remaining Position
Shift: 11.00PM to 7.00AM
Roster: 3 shifts on, 3 shifts off working an average of 56 hours a fortnight over a 6-week rotating roster cycle (0.7FTE).
The hourly rate ranges from $23.50 to $28.18 dependent upon relevant NZQA qualifications and experience. Penal rates apply to nights (25%) between 8.00PM and 6.00AM, weekends (50%) from midnight Friday/Saturday until midnight Sunday/Monday and public holidays (100%)

You will be the type of person who works in a rational and calm manner and who has the skills and experience to effectively de-escalate difficult situations and promote a safe and therapeutic environment. You will be able to relate well to patients and their visitors. You will be able to work with the clinical team and follow directions.
Previous experience in security, or a related industry is preferred. However, this is not essential as training will be provided.
Additionally, you will have:
- empathy and a non-judgmental attitude towards patients and members of the public
- the ability to relate with ease to people from a variety of different cultures and backgrounds
- the ability to recognise and pass on issues that may affect patient welfare
- a good level of physical fitness and mobility.
