Older People’s Health Service at Te Toka Tumai is excited to offer a unique opportunity for a Senior Pharmacist to develop and progress their skills and knowledge in the comprehensive management of older people. Are you a pro-active, highly motivated, clinical pharmacist looking for an outstanding opportunity to take your practice to the next level in a world class clinical environment? Do you have a genuine interest to work with older people? In this senior pharmacist position, you will be integral to the ongoing development and delivery of a high level, comprehensive and professional clinical pharmacy service to our recently opened Acute Care of the Elderly (ACE) team as part of the Older People’s Health service. You will work in partnership with our medical and nursing colleagues in an environment where teamwork is prioritised, valued and the patient is at the heart of everything we do.
This is a permanent, full- time role (40 hours per week), based at Auckland City Hospital.
The opportunities for professional development here is impressive to say the least. Not only will you mentor and coach rotational pharmacists in the service, you’ll also have the chance to support teaching at the University of Auckland. We are sure that you will also relish the chance to get involved in the development of protocols, prescriptions and guidelines, and education and training of pharmacists and the wider multidisciplinary team in order to facilitate good prescribing practice.

Our Pharmacy department is an innovative and exciting place to work. We employ over 120 staff including those working within two retail pharmacies and a flagship inpatient service. Our award winning and growing clinical pharmacy service has over 40 pharmacists working across both secondary and tertiary level services.

We are continually evolving our service to best meet the complex needs of our older patients living with frailty. Over the course of 2022, we opened an Acute Care of the Elderly ward and developed a dedicated hip fracture pathway with the aim to improve patient outcomes and experience.
We want to build a service that works for Māori and their whānau and Tikanga Māori will be at the centre of our design and decisions.
We can offer you a comprehensive induction and education programme to enhance your knowledge and skill with a focus on acute medical conditions commonly seen in the older patients with frailty and associated rehabilitation needs.
About you - He kōrero mōu
You will have:
- A commitment to biculturalism
- A commitment to achieving equitable outcomes for Māori
- Knowledge and understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and implications for clinical practice
- Registered or be eligible for registration with the Pharmacy Council of New Zealand and hold a current Annual Practising Certificate
- At least three years’ clinical experience, post-graduate qualifications desirable
- Drive, enthusiasm and initiative with excellent organisational and inter-personal skills
- Pro-active and can-do approach with the ability to be flexible and work autonomously as well as in a team
- Excellent communication and time management skills are essential, as well as the ability to develop close working relationships
