Location: Hawke’s Bay Fallen Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital
Service: Ngā Rau Rākau, Mental Health Inpatient Unit

About the role | Korero mō te tūranga
You will be working as one of two Consultant Psychiatrists in our busy, 23-bed inpatient unit. Medical cover also includes two registrars and two house-surgeons. The unit is primarily intended to provide acute care, but a number of patients remain on the unit beyond the acute phase of illness for a variety of clinical reasons. A significant proportion of the patients will be subject to compulsory assessment and treatment, reflecting the severity of their conditions.
Your role will be to work alongside the other psychiatrist to provide clinical care of the patients in the ward, both directly and through supervising other staff, particularly the junior medical staff. Consultant Psychiatrist input is essential in a range of clinical activities, including 24-hour seclusion reviews, periodic reviews of treatment, statutory assessments under the Mental Health (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act 1992 and decisions about leave and discharge.
The Mental Health Service has a robust Peer Review Group and you will have access to CPD activities to meet ongoing registration requirements.

The name Ngā Rau Rākau means a collection of trees. By standing together as part of the forest, the trees are protected, they are sheltered, they grow healthier, they grow stronger, they are supported and safe.
Nga Rau Rakau is the acute admission facility for seriously mentally ill people in the Hawkes Bay region. The 23-bed unit is made up of 16 inpatient beds and seven sub-acute beds, arranged into three inpatient areas: secure (“Pukatea”), including two seclusion rooms, a semi-secure area (“Kahikatea”) for patients transitioning out of Pukatea, where patients can make use of an outside courtyard as well as more internal space, an open ward (“Kowhai”). There is also a day program (“Harakeke”) that operates out of an adjacent area in the building. The unit is light, modern and as home-like as possible.
