Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role
The Kaumātua/Kuia role is a pivotal position that connects our team to the community including Te iwi Māori and providers that we access to support our whaiora in our care. The Kaumātua/Kuia role takes into consideration Te Ao Māori approaches or frameworks when supporting Māori to achieve their potential and hauora goals while in our care. The role champions tikanga and kawa to support our workforce to be culturally safe and accountable
The role will maintain the integrity and mana of Te Whare o Matairangi. That Māori and all tangata whaiora in our care that are experiencing an enduring mental health distress have access to this cultural knowing for nourishment and comfort.
At a service level, Kaumātua/Kuia are in a position to have a voice to develop and shape services to better meet the needs of tangata whaiora and their whānau. As the cultural champion for Te Whare o Matairangi you are well placed to influence the quality of engagement by ensuring there are cultural considerations being explored when developing care plans and goals.
The role of Kaumātua/Kuia is to be a korowai (protective cloak) for tangata whaiora, for our community providers but especially for our clinical team to be able to facilitate and to promote cultural values in practice to achieve the best and appropriate outcomes for tangata whaiora and their whānau.
In Te Whare O Matairangi, Kaumātua/Kuia have the ability to contribute and support our team by providing your cultural knowledge and advice to compliment, validate and strengthen tangata whaiora wellbeing and identity as being important for them.
As well as leading the tikanga and championing Te ao Maori in practice, the role will guide all staff on matters relating to tikanga, kawa that includes leading all cultural protocols within Te Whare o Matairangi with a vision to develop staff to be culturally aware and confident.
This role is underpinned by the Hauora Māori Cultural Competency Framework as per the cultural competency framework under the PSA Allied Health Collective.

Te Whare O Matairangi:
- To provide a sanctuary in time of need, supporting a journey from crisis to wellness -
Is a 24 hour mental health assessment and treatment acute inpatient services for adults aged from 18 years, who are experiencing serious mental health concerns. The focus is on recovery and returning people to their usual life with community support if needed. The team aims to provide the best possible clinical care in a respectful, supportive, safe and caring environment.
Te Whare O Matairangi has Multi-Disciplinary Teams comprising of Medical Officers, Psychologists, Kaumātua, Registered Nurses, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists and Mental Health Support Workers.
Intensive Recovery Service:
IRS is one of the service groupings within the wider Mental Health Addictions and Intellectual Disability Services. IRS comprises of approximately 240 staff from a variety of clinical and administrative backgrounds. The service is led in partnership by the Operations Manager and Clinical Leader. As the name suggests the IRS encompasses services dedicated to responding and supporting those people and their whānau who may require urgent and acute responses and care. These services may be provided in a community setting or in hospital depending on the needs of the person.

To be successful in this role you will have:
- Ability to meet Hauora Māori cultural competencies as per Allied Health Collective
- Capacity to work in an emotionally demanding environment
- Personal qualities such as a sense of humour, flexibility, self-awareness and assertiveness
- Demonstrated experience of working with Māori and knowledge of the complexities of health issues
- Competency with Microsoft Office products
- Ability to prioritise a changing workload
Experience in a mental health setting working with clients with serious mental health disorders is desirable.
