We are actively recruiting for a General Manager, Policy (Wellbeing) to provide the leadership and expertise we require to ensure the Puni runs effectively, the Deputy Secretary is well supported, and that timely policy advice is presented to the Minister for Māori Development, Select Committees and other Ministers as it is required.

Te Puni Kōkiri is grounded as the Government's Principal Policy Advisor on Māori Wellbeing and Development. The Manager will look after the following areas within the Puni.

Strategy led, and results driven this team supports the advancement of Māori wellbeing through evidence-based approaches that is anchored in the cultural context of iwi, hapū, whānau and Māori. This position leads four Managers, Māori Public Policy, Māori Sector Partnerships, Te Pou Taiao and Te Pae Tawhiti. Teams that lead across the public sector, that understand and prioritise issues, needs and opportunities that impact iwi and Māori.

The General Manager bridges the gap between policy strategy and delivery, providing policy advice to Ministers and the Deputy Secretary.
- As joint leader of the Puni, providing leadership to essential teams, and orchestrating comprehensive, adaptable, agile work programmes amongst them
- Representing the Ministry in critical forums, including with the Minister for Māori Development, at Select Committees, and cross-agency forums
- Contributing your insights and thought leadership to executive leadership
- Leading specific strategic policy projects and hold different policy "portfolios" as required by the Deputy Secretary
- Leading a network across government agencies, ensuring that agencies strive to lift their standards of policy analysis and advice

The appointment range for this role is between $214,378 and $267,973 per annum and the salary will be determined based on the successful candidate's skills and experience.

You have extensive public sector senior leadership experience including briefing senior leaders and Ministers, knowledge of policy and have led a variety of pieces of work, from conception to completion. We are looking for someone who has:
- Experience operating at a senior leadership role within Government and can articulate skills as outlined in the position description
- Familiar and comfortable in te ao Māori and a working knowledge of tikanga and how it is observed
- Confident talking to Ministers and executive leaders in te reo Māori, and articulating key policy statements in this context
- Significant experience working with iwi and hapū, and whānau , including at a local level
- Ability to quickly pivot between and lead priority tasks, while responding to needs of the government of the day. Resilience in the face of change, remaining calm under pressure
- Can show examples of leading policy teams in the government context, with a focus on improving outcomes for Māori.
- A creative thinker, who, while using best practice approaches, can also develop new ideas and solutions to wellbeing and development challenges
