Based in Pōneke Wellington, our Policy Puni leads across the public sector to understand and prioritise issues, needs and opportunities impacting on Māori development and wellbeing. The Puni consists of 8 teams focusing on specific Policy areas.
The Housing policy team focuses on addressing the barriers that make it difficult to develop housing on whenua Māori and on influencing the housing system (from emergency housing to home ownership) with the aim of improving outcomes for Māori. We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Advisor to join this small, dynamic, professional team.
Te whai wāhitanga | The opportunity
Providing a high standard of advice to the Policy Manager, Housing, other key stakeholders within Te Puni Kōkiri and across the wider public sector. You will help to shape and influence policy and will
- Provide credible, evidence-based advice anchored in the context of iwi, hapu, whānau and Māori as it applies to Housing
- Conduct thorough and detailed analysis of complex policy issues to understand their implications and identify potential solutions
- Work collaboratively with peers at Te Puni Kōkiri and with other government agencies including the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Kāinga Ora and councils in developing and influencing policy
- Apply and advise on te ao Māori and Te Tiriti based frameworks as they relate to policy
- Provide advice and support to Senior and Executive Leadership teams, Ministers and key stakeholders
- Uplift capability within the team through coaching and mentoring kaimahi, and promoting a culture of continuous feedback
The appointment range for this role is between $93,317 and $115,743 per annum and the salary will be determined based on the successful candidate's skills and experience.
Mōu | About you
An experienced policy professional, you will have previous experience in a government policy shop where te ao Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi frameworks underpin your mahi. You may be familiar with resource management and Waitangi Tribunal processes. You will have:
- The mix of knowledge, skills, practices, and behaviours required by a modern policy practitioner to be able to deliver quality policy advice
- An understanding of, and ability to prioritise the flow of information and manage complex policy issues
- Some knowledge of the current housing environment in Aotearoa, including the barriers that make it difficult to develop housing on whenua Māori
- Proven ability to lead and manage cross-government policy development. Prior experience in a government policy setting
- Have highly developed communication skills, including written. Experienced in building key stakeholder relationships. Skilled at explaining complex issues clearly to diverse audiences, including non-technical experts
- Are comfortable in an ao Māori environment and are comfortable in situations where tikanga is observed. A level of competency in te reo Māori is ideal or having the willingness to learn.
