You will be an integral part of the Forensic Pathology team within a department that handles over 1000 coronial autopsies each year, covering the full spectrum of post-mortems. We play a crucial role in mass fatality events, operate a 7 day a week on-call service and are accredited by the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA) for Registrar training, the National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME) and International Accreditation new Zealand (IANZ). The department operates out of LabPLUS on the Auckland City Hospital site.
This position is responsible for tissue management, including administration, disposal and return of tissue and comprehensive tissue audits. Additionally, this position is also responsible for providing oversight to the administration team in the department. This includes managing the departmental administrative resources Including but not limited to, perinatal, coronial and non-coronial administration, transcription, file and data management, unclaimed deceased and providing assistance to whānau of tūpāpaku. As the supervisor for this team, this will also include training, and task allocation. You will be accountable for this team and as such, be the first point of contact for all administration and tissue related issues. This requires liaising within the department, LabPLUS, the wider Te Toka Tumai organisation and our external stakeholders. The successful applicant will report directly to the Technical Head, but will also work in close collaboration with the Senior Leadership Team to problem solve, ensure efficient operation, and minimise risk in the administration and tissue areas.
As you would expect, the nature of our work means you’ll be exposed to content and concepts of a graphic nature, including forensic material and images, the mortuary and theatres. As such, it’s important you come to us with a resilient mature demeanour and a respectful approach to your work.

Nga Pūkenga Motuhake | Important Skills
You will:
- Be an experienced Medical Laboratory Technician and registered with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand
- Hold a current APC
- Have great IT skills
- Have meticulous attention to detail
- Have experience troubleshooting
- Have experience with administrative tasks (transcription, documentation, file management etc)
- Have experience leading a team (training, delegation, staff development etc)
- Have an emphasis on quality outcomes and be able to develop and implement quality improvement initiatives
- Have a working knowledge of standard ISO 15189
- Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal)
- Be able to maintain internal and external relationships
