The Regulatory Policy Design team is responsible for the overall regulatory policy framework and its conceptual underpinnings. Its work covers varied and fascinating subject matter ranging from decarbonisation, emerging technologies, workforce improvements and safety at sea to working with stakeholders and across government on legislative reform. The team provides quality policy analysis and advice on legislation and the design of regulatory instruments including maritime and marine protection rules. They also work closely with our International Engagement and Coordination team to ensure that international developments are well integrated into the policy programme.
Te tūnga | The role
As the Principal Advisor Regulatory Policy Design you'll be responsible for providing quality insights, leadership and advice on matters relating to the design of regulatory policy. Working closely with the Manager Regulatory Policy Design you'll advise on and inform the development and maintenance of Maritime NZ's overall strategy as it relates to regulatory policy design.
You'll provide rigorous high-quality advice on the means of achieving the Government's desired outcomes for the maritime sector while taking the lead and project management of specific work programme items. You'll coach and mentor the wider Regulatory Policy Design team and provide analytical leadership over the work of a small group of Advisors in a way that enables them to produce high quality and timely advice.

- Proven experience and knowledge of regulatory policy design
- Good understanding of project management and implementing legislation changes in a regulatory setting
- A good understanding of both primary and secondary legislative reform
- Experience providing advice to wide range of audiences, to translate principles into action/application
- Strong analytical skills and ability to problem-solve in complex environments with experience of using these to create insights that drive process improvement
- Ability to influence and provide support and subject matter leadership to peers and staff
- Experience contributing and taking the lead in projects and programmes of work involving multiple objectives and diverse stakeholders in a fast-changing environment
- Successful track record as a proactive and innovative thinker who is willing to involve others to look at problems from different perspectives and develop fresh solutions
- Aptitude for fostering positive working relationships with people across all levels of an organisation; collaborative working style with a strong user focus
