At the Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB) | Te Tira Tiaki, our mission is to protect and enhance Aotearoa New Zealand's security and wellbeing. We provide Signals Intelligence and Cyber Security and resilience to organisations of national significance to successfully navigate in an unpredictable world.
The role:
We are looking for software engineers with a great attitude who are passionate about technology. We pride ourselves on the level of positive collaboration among our teams, and you will be working with a diverse group of customer-centric technical professionals, who will share their expertise and help you grow.
We have opportunities within two of the teams in our Mission Capabilities Unit that will each have a different focus, but need to work closely together to achieve their objectives. These roles can be based in Wellington or Auckland.
Reporting and Dissemination
This team is focussed on uplifting capabilities for the most important product intelligence agencies produce, reporting! Whether it be sourced internally or shared with us, you will be working to ensure reporting can be produced, accessed and used efficiently and effectively.
Experience we are looking for:
Most relevant:
- Java
- Familiarity working with PDF, OOXML, XML and XSLT data
- Enterprise Search engines (e.g. Elasticsearch, Solr)
- NoSQL and key-value databases (e.g. Accumulo, HDFS, etcd, Redis, MongoDB)
Desirable:
- DevSecOps
- OpenShift
- Kubernetes
- Python
- SQL skills (e.g. PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB)
- JavaScript UI frameworks (e.g. jQuery) and HTML/CSS an advantage
Security Capabilities
This team provides capabilities that manage access and authorisation to systems and data, enabling us to work securely with our reporting products and data more broadly. It also works closely with the GCSB CISO office to mature our continuous assurance and security operations systems and practices.

- Automation tools e.g. Terraform, Ansible
- OpenShift
- JavaScript
- An understanding of certificates and KPI infrastructure

Before you apply
Working within our unique environment means we have to ensure you're eligible for employment.
You must:
- Have been a New Zealand Citizen for at least 10 years
OR
Hold a current NZ Residency Class Visa and ideally have been a citizen of the UK, USA, Canada or Australia for at least 10 years
- Be eligible to obtain a Top Secret Special (TSS) security clearance
- Ordinarily, this means you'll have a 15 year checkable background in countries NZSIS Vetting can make meaningful and reliable checks.
