Platform Engineer (12 month fixed term contract) at New Zealand Lotteries Commission, Auckland (Tāmaki-makau-rau)

Your day-to-day:
As a Platform Engineer, you'll be at the heart of ensuring the availability, performance, and enhancement of our production environments. Your day will involve managing and improving Lotto NZ platforms, both on-premises and in the cloud. You'll implement infrastructure as code and automate tasks to enhance efficiency. Monitoring system performance and ensuring all environments are up-to-date with the right versions will be key responsibilities. You'll work closely with the Environment team, Development, testing, and release capabilities, as well as external partners to ensure our environments are fit for purpose and highly available.
You'll support Lotto NZ's public cloud tenancies, providing troubleshooting and developing documented procedures and operational run books for cloud systems. Maintaining and improving cloud system monitoring capabilities, supporting identity and access management policies, and adhering to Lotto NZ security standards will be crucial.
Incident management and continuous delivery will be significant aspects of your role. You'll ensure all incidents are managed and escalated as per Lotto NZ's incident management process, understanding the impacts on systems, people, and processes. You'll also provide thought leadership in implementing and supporting dev/ops methodologies using modern toolsets and processes. By supporting automation throughout the SDLC, you'll improve the efficiency of build, test, and deployment activities.
Collaboration is essential in this role. You'll work with Platform Engineers, development, and QA teams to ensure alignment of processes and toolsets, facilitating knowledge sharing across teams. Your proactive approach will drive continuous improvement, as you'll monitor, manage, and patch all environments, using appropriate tools and processes to enhance availability, management processes, and the speed of releases.
In addition to your technical responsibilities, you'll document Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and ensure they are regularly reviewed and updated to reflect best practices. You'll ensure BCP and DR procedures are in place and accurately reflect the current environment, incorporating new services or feature releases proactively. Your role will be dynamic and multifaceted, involving a mix of technical responsibilities, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
A bit about you:
You're a technically skilled individual with a strong understanding of mid to large-scale complex software systems and continuous delivery principles. With at least 5 years of experience in similar roles, you have a solid grasp of Linux operating systems, such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and update management technologies, including Red Hat Satellite. Your expertise includes scripting languages like PowerShell, Bash, and Python, as well as virtualization, container, and web technologies.
Your experience includes administering public cloud environments such as Azure and AWS, and you have supported public cloud technologies such as Azure Service Bus and other PaaS capabilities. You're familiar with managing and supporting private cloud capabilities, such as Docker, Kubernetes, and Red Hat OpenShift. Your high-level understanding of networking principles and experience working within technical administration, development, and networking teams make you a valuable asset.
You have a deep understanding of infrastructure automation technologies, such as Terraform, Ansible, and Puppet, and are proficient in both relational and non-relational database technologies like MySQL. Your technical skills are complemented by your ability to troubleshoot complex issues and implement effective solutions. You're dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of security, reliability, and performance across all environments.
In terms of qualifications, you hold relevant tertiary education and certifications, with at least 5 years of experience in similar roles. Your proactive approach to continuous improvement drives you to identify opportunities to enhance development tooling, frameworks, and approaches. You're passionate about learning and improvement, always staying up to date with emerging technologies.
