Youth Peer Support - Far North at Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora Te Tai Tokerau, Northland

  • Permanent full-time role working 40 hours per week based in the Far North Child & Adolescent Mental Health and Addictions Service

About the Role

Peer support is based on the concept that people who have had a lived experience of mental health difficulties in their teen years, and have experienced recovery, can instil hope by providing support and demonstrating recovery to others.

You have the opportunity to support tamariki, rangatahi and whānau who utilise Te Roopu Kimiora (Child and Adolescent Mental Health and Addiction) services.

In this role you will help provide a youth perspective, awhi young people in their mental health journey and, when needed, provide an extra voice and advocate for our young clients. You can expect to work as part of a team to directly support young people on their path to recovery and bring a youth voice service development.

About the Team/Service/Location

This team provides acute and community services for children and young people (up to 19 years) who have significant mental health, alcohol and other drug concerns. The service includes assessment, therapeutic intervention from key workers and psychologists and psychiatry.

About you

Essentials skills and experience you will bring to this role are:

  • Respects others cultures and values
  • Consistent and thorough approach to work
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent listening skills
  • Qualification(s) and/or training in community and peer support work or commitment to undertake this training
  • Personal experience of mental health or addiction difficulties that has altered life courses, and of resiliency/recovery
  • Identifies as a young person
