Trades Assistant | Christchurch Health Campus at Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand Waitaha Canterbury, Christchurch

We - re looking for a practical, motivated Trades Assistant to join our Facilities Maintenance & Engineering team. You - ll play a key role in supporting the maintenance, repair, and upgrading of buildings, plant, and equipment across Health NZ | Te Whatu Ora Waitaha Canterbury sites - helping ensure our healthcare facilities are safe, functional, and well-maintained for staff and patients alike.

About the role

  • Assist in maintenance and repairs of building services including:
    • Heating, ventilation, air-conditioning (HVAC), water, steam, compressed air, and medical gas systems.
    • Structural elements, building fabric, and internal finishes.
  • Support inspections, planned maintenance, and defect repairs across CDHB facilities.
  • Help with installation and upgrade of building plant and equipment.
  • Follow all health and safety policies, including correct use of PPE.
  • Respond to urgent maintenance issues via mobile phone, as needed.
  • Identify and report when improvements or changes are required.
  • Ensure compliance with building and safety regulations at all times.

About you

Essential:

  • Experience in a building maintenance or service environment.
  • Understanding of building statutory requirements and maintenance standards.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and prioritise tasks.
  • Familiarity with maintenance procedures and safety protocols.
  • Able to work closely with professionals across clinical and non-clinical teams.
  • Reliable, adaptable, and responsive to change.
  • Strong observation skills to identify maintenance issues.

Desirable:

  • Experience supporting 24-hour operational environments.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve operational issues on the go.
