Transpower is the owner and operator of the National Grid. At the heart of the electricity sector, we transport high voltage electricity from where it is generated to large electricity users and the distribution businesses that deliver it to homes and businesses nationwide.

About the Team

Transpower as Grid Owner has duties, responsibilities and obligations under the Electricity Industry Participation (EPIC) Code regarding the rating and capability of its assets. Learn more about the code by visiting: https://www.ea.govt.nz/code-and-compliance/the-code/

Transpower's largest division, Grid Delivery, ensures that our grid assets i.e. towers, lines and substations continue to deliver a highly stable electricity supply to New Zealand, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Within Grid Delivery the Quality & Compliance team is responsible for ensuring Transpower maintains compliance with statutory obligations and regulatory requirements by establishing and implementing robust processes and procedures to exchange asset capability information internally and externally, whilst identifying compliance risks and facilitating process and system improvements to mitigate and prevent further risks and breaches of the Electricity Industry Participation Code.

The team also supports and administers critical processes and systems, ensuring accurate and timely information exchange. Additionally, they support commissioning processes and promote compliance awareness within the business, oversee breach investigations, identify compliance risks, and facilitate improvements to mitigate and prevent further risk.

In this role you will enjoy a variety of work and will work alongside capable colleagues, and contribute to talented and dedicated teams who work across various and interesting fields.  You will grow, develop and learn to navigate the complexity of our business, whilst deepening your analytical skills in support of ensuring that our compliance performance continues to improve, and deadlines are met.

Over the next 12-18 months your role will be pivotal as you:

  • Collaborate with internal as well as external teams on compliance matters
  • Facilitate information exchange between Grid Owner and System Operator
  • Investigate breaches, ensure root cause analysis, and apply learnings
  • Monitor commissioning key performance indicators and provide regular reports
  • Share insights, areas for focus or improvement with wider team 
  • Identify improvements to mitigate compliance risks and prevent breaches
  • Provide compliance awareness and training to internal and external stakeholders
  • Identify potential changes to the Electricity Industry Participation Code

What are we looking for?

With desire, and ability to quickly learn and apply knowledge, ideally you will have electricity industry knowledge and experience (or come from a comparable regulated industry).

You will hold a relevant tertiary qualification, and possess courage to ask questions and challenge status quo, conduct business as usual activities whilst applying a continuous improvement mindset.

You will be adept at identifying opportunities to improve, innovate, and automate the way things are done, you may even possess some coding/programming skills to help with these outcomes.

Previous experience in a compliance, legal, risk, or compliance setting or a related field whilst not a prerequisite would be beneficial.

Your CV and Cover letter will demonstrate:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification (ideally with electrical engineering/technician background)
  • Knowledge of the electricity industry regulatory environment (or comparable industry)
  • Strong relationship building skills
  • Experience in investigation, analysis, and reporting
  • Proficiency with contemporary business intelligence tools such as Microsoft Power BI
  • A proactive approach with the ability to identify opportunities for improvement and innovation
