Surgical Registrar at Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand Tairāwhiti, Gisborne

    About the Role

    The Department of General Surgery seeks one non-training registrar to join our team from (date of reg change over). Our non-training registrar position is unique in New Zealand in that you will get a significant amount of hands-on time in both the operating theatre and endoscopy suite, giving you ample experience in preparation for advanced training. 

    Registrars are responsible for managing patients on the ward, acute admissions and attending clinical activities (Operating theatre, endoscopy, clinics). After-hours on-call is generally one week night per week and one weekend per month (Friday - Sunday). There is good flexibility in our service to allow for personal and professional leave. The position is highly regarded by prior registrars and competitively sought after.

    About the Team/Service/ Location

    The Gisborne department of General Surgery consists of five General Surgeons, each with their own sub-specialty interest. There is one training registrar and one non-training registrar. There are currently four house surgeons on the team. Registrars are each assigned to one team of two or three Surgeons.

    Gisborne Hospital, a 110 bed acute care hospital which serves a wide geographical area, Tairāwhiti, extending up the East Cape of New Zealand, creating enormous scope and variety in the work available to an enthusiastic registrar. Providing healthcare to a population of 54,000, Health NZ Te Whatu Ora Tairāwhiti is well supported locally by comprehensive surgical services and has a full range of diagnostic facilities on site including a new MRI scanner and CT scanner. We have strong ties with our tertiary referral centre in Waikato.

    About you

    · Suitable for Resident Medical Officers PGY3

    · Applicants must be registered, or eligible for registration, with the Medical Council of New Zealand.

    · You will need to be a NZ or Australian citizen or resident, or have an appropriate visa to be eligible to live and work in NZ. For more information on visa requirements please visit the Immigration NZ website 

    Bonus attributes:

    · Prior experience in General Surgery

    · Competency with te ao Māori, tikanga, and te reo Māori or a commitment to starting your journey and taking ownership of your learning and growth

    · Experience in projects / initiatives which give effect to Te Tiriti principals and frameworks, and the application of Mātauranga Māori and Kaupapa Māori approaches, particularly as they apply in healthcare settings.
