Location:  Starship Children’s Hospital

Service:    Paediatric Intensive Care 

Contract:  Fixed term, full time, 6-12 months - starting early February or August 2026

 Moū - About you 

• Previous experience working as a registrar (or equivalent internationally eg PGY3+) in relevant areas such as critical care/intensive care medicine, anaesthesia, paediatric medicine or emergency medicine is desirable
• Eligibility for general registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) is essential
• Registrars who are undertaking training with the following colleges (or equivalent internationally) are highly encouraged to apply:

o   College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM)

o   Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA)

o   Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP – Paediatrics)

o   Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM)

Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Starship is a national service for children requiring intensive care. The unit is a combined cardiac and general intensive care facility with 20 ICU beds and 10 HDU beds, admitting approximately 1100 - 1200 children each year. We provide pre- and post-operative care for children undergoing treatment for all congenital cardiac conditions. General admissions include the full range of medical and surgical conditions including solid organ transplantation, spinal surgery and neurosurgery. All intensive care support techniques are employed including ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation).

PICU also staffs and runs the only dedicated paediatric retrieval service in New Zealand. Children are retrieved from all over New Zealand. There are approximately 300 retrievals each year, with a mix of road, fixed wing and helicopter transfers.

Registrars work a shift roster (days and nights) and are supervised by senior medical staff at all times. We have registrars with varying levels of experience from those new to the role to some nearing the end of training and you will be supported accordingly. We also have SHOs as part of our team. Specialist paediatric intensivists provide 24 hour 7 day cover. Ours Fellows in Critical Care Medicine also work in a supervisory role for registrars. We work as part of an extensive and diverse multi-disciplinary team with our nursing and allied health colleagues.

Starship PICU is an accredited training unit:

o   CICM – Foundation (6 months) and core training, including paediatric requirement for adult pathway trainees (up to 24 months)

o   RACP (Gen Paeds AT) – 6 months acute paediatrics (core training)

o   RACP (PEM AT) – 6 months required training

o   ACEM (PEM AT) – 6 months required training

There is an active education program which includes access to weekly protected teaching sessions and opportunities to participate in multidisciplinary simulation scenarios. You may also have the opportunity to develop additional skills such as bedside ultrasound and airway experience during paediatric anaesthetic lists. Registrars with an interest will be supported to complete research during their tenure.
