Intensive Care Registrar - 2026 Training Year at Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand Te Matau a Māui Hawke's Bay, Hawkes Bay

About the Role
We are seeking an Intensive Care (ICU) Registrar to join our Intensive Care Unit here at Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldiers Memorial Hospital. The 2026 training year commences on 2 February and mid-year starts 3 August.

Our ICU is accredited as a C12 unit under the CICM training program, with endorsements for General, Rural, and Paediatric training.

We actively support CICM candidates, helping them prepare for Part 1 and Part 2 exams, and have a history of trainees successfully completing their CICM research projects during their time with us. Non-training registrars have also published research projects in peer-reviewed journals. All registrars have the chance to get involved in quality improvement and research initiatives, contributing to the ongoing advancement of our department.

About the Team/Service/ Location
The successful candidate would join a team of 12-14 Registrars and a diverse group of nurses, doctors, and allied health professionals.

Our ICU provides critical care for both adult and paediatric patients, managing complex cases and transporting patients within Hawke’s Bay and to tertiary referral centres. You’ll have opportunities to be involved in rotary wing and road transfers.

Hawke’s Bay Hospital is a 400-bed secondary-level public hospital in Hastings, serving a population of over 180,000 people. We offer both acute and elective care across a wide range of medical and surgical specialties, including paediatrics, obstetrics & gynaecology, and more. Although we don’t provide cardiothoracic and neurosurgery, we are supported by a strong regional ICU team, ensuring comprehensive care for a diverse patient population.

About you

  • You’re a Resident Medical Officer (RMO) PGY4 or above, although we will also consider applications from enthusiastic PGY3s
  • You have completed or planning to complete a BASIC within the first month of employment
  • You are registered or eligible for general registration, with the Medical Council of New Zealand
