About the Role
We are seeking a Medical Registrar Advanced Trainee in Renal looking to further your training by joining our Medical Department at Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldiers Memorial Hospital. The 2026 placements are 2 February and/or 3 August.

We are accredited to support one RACP Advanced Trainee in Renal Medicine for up to 12 months. You will be working alongside 4 Renal Physicians, and a strong multi-disciplinary team. There are 2 renal registrar positions – one being filled by a basic trainee or general medical advanced trainee.

Your training will include inpatient renal medicine, community dialysis, and outpatient clinics managing Chronic Kidney Disease, Transplant, and Dialysis, with outreach clinic opportunities in Wairoa.

As a regional hospital, your afterhours work will be in Acute General Medicine. There is opportunity to extend your training time in Hawke’s Bay by rotating through other accredited medical registrar roles, suitable for both advanced and basic training.

About the Team/Service/Location
The wider Medical Department comprises nine ward-based teams and includes 28 dual-trained Internal Medicine Physicians, 24 Registrars, 15 House Officers, and support from Trainee Interns.

We foster a collaborative, supportive and collegial work environment. Our current rotations include Cardiology, Respiratory, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, General Medicine (with Neurology and Older People’s Health), Renal, as well as outpatient-based rotations in Medical Oncology and Haematology.

Hawke’s Bay Hospital is a 400-bed secondary level public hospital in Hastings, serving a population of over 180,000 people. We offer both acute and elective care across a wide range of medical and surgical specialties. We are supported by a strong regional ICU and flight team with tertiary support for cardiac intervention, cardiothoracic surgery, plastics and neurosurgery from Wellington, ensuring comprehensive care for a diverse patient population.

About you

  • You’re a Resident Medical Officer (RMO)
  • You are registered as an Advanced Trainee with the Royal Australian College of Physicians, or expecting to become so in 2026
  • You have either commenced Renal Advanced training in another location, or are interested in commencing your first year of Renal Advanced Training with us in Hawke’s Bay
  • Renal rotations are also available for both RACP Basic & Advanced Trainees, please apply to the Medical Registrar advertisement
  • You are registered or eligible for general registration, with the Medical Council of New Zealand
