About the Location
- Rotorua Hospital has all secondary level specialties with tertiary level care provided at Waikato hospital. The patient mix is broad with a full range of trauma, medical, surgical, paediatric and minor presentations. The population we serve has relative high levels of deprivation, social issues, poor health literacy and many live in rural and remote communities. This adds to the acuity and complexity of our patient presentations, but makes our work more rewarding. Our population is 35% Māori and as a team we are committed to improving inequity and aligning with ACEM’s Manaaki Mana strategy.
- Senior support is excellent; our medical team consists of 12 ED SMOs and 14 ED RMOs. With a small numbers of registrar positions there are abundant opportunities for gaining procedural experience. Half of our FACEMs have achieved Fellowship within the last five years, so are up to date with current College requirements and are enthusiastic about helping trainees prepare and pass the College exams.
- Our friendly team of doctors and nurses operates in a medium-sized ED, with approximately 37,500 attendances per annum.
- Lakes is a geothermal wonderland and is also home to several scenic lakes, including Lake Taupō, the largest lake in New Zealand. Rotorua and Taupō are the go-to places for hiking, mountain biking, and water sports; you can also dive into traditional experiences and learn more about Māori culture in the region.
