We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Medical Officer (Consultant) - Paediatric Persistent Pain to join our dedicated Paediatric Persistent Pain Team at Christchurch Hospital. This is a rewarding role focused on improving the lives of tamariki and rangatahi across Canterbury and the West Coast through expert clinical care, collaborative teamwork, and service development.

About the Role

As a Paediatric Persistent Pain Specialist, you will play a central role in assessing and treating tamariki and rangatahi with chronic and complex pain, in both inpatient and outpatient settings. You will provide specialist pain medicine input that will help to support and develop an interdisciplinary team including psychology, psychiatry, , and physiotherapy clinicians.

You - ll contribute to clinical leadership, treatment planning, education, quality improvement, and collaborative care models, with a strong commitment to equitable outcomes for Māori and other underserved populations.  You will develop and communicate treatment goals and plans in collaboration with the referrer, multidisciplinary team, patients and their families to maximise participation in daily care routines.

Our Paediatric Persistent Pain Team is a values-led service committed to delivering whānau-centred, evidence-based care. Working across Canterbury and the West Coast, we - re focused on continuous improvement, service development, and inter-disciplinary collaboration to support long-term wellbeing for our young patients.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Fellowship with the Faculty of Pain Medicine (FPMANZCA) or an equivalent fellowship qualification.
  • Vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
  • Significant experience in paediatric chronic and acute pain management.
  • A collaborative and compassionate approach to patient care.
  • A commitment to advancing service development, research, and teaching.

Experience working in an interdisciplinary pain service is desirable.
