Youth Mental Health Assistant | West Coast at Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand Te Tai o Poutini West Coast, Greymouth

  • Permanent full-time position working 40 hours per week

Are you passionate about supporting rangatahi (youth) and making a positive impact in mental health? We are looking for a compassionate, community-minded Youth Mental Health Assistant (YMHA) to join our dedicated team.

About the Role
As a Youth Mental Health Assistant, you - ll work alongside a multidisciplinary health care team under the direction of a Registered Nurse or other Registered Health Professional. Your role will involve both clinical and non-clinical support within the community setting, and at times may include redeployment to the Mental Health Inpatient Unit to support youth safety.

You - ll help reduce the pressure on clinical staff by taking on delegated tasks such as:

  • Supporting case managers in managing youth safely and effectively.
  • Transporting consumers to appointments and activities.
  • Delivering prescriptions to pharmacies.
  • Assisting youth to engage in meaningful activities.
  • Participating in joint community visits with case managers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to a high-quality, safe, and supportive care environment.
  • Identify and report health and safety concerns in a timely manner.
  • Take an active role in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Support the principles and articles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in all aspects of your work.
  • Participate in professional development, including Whāraurau learning modules and mandatory training.

About You
You - ll be someone with empathy, resilience, and a desire to support the wellbeing of our youth. You - ll be willing to learn and grow in the mental health field and work collaboratively as part of a team.

To be successful, you will have:

  • A NZ Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Mental Health and Addiction Support) Level 3, or be willing to complete it within 12 months of employment.
  • Relevant experience working in mental health or community support roles (preferred).
  • Good computer literacy or willingness to learn new systems.
  • Personal safety training (or willingness to complete).
  • A strong understanding of youth needs and the ability to engage effectively with diverse communities.
  • A strong understanding and appreciation of the importance for Tangata Whaiora of connections to marae, iwi and hapu.
