Senior Medical Officer, Plastics at Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand Counties Manukau, Auckland

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

·         SMO Orthopaedic Hands:  Auckland, Middlemore:   Permanent Fulltime 

·         Remuneration as per AMSM collective

·         The Auckland Regional Centre for Plastic Reconstructive & Hand Surgery and New Zealand National Burn Centre consist of 6 Orthopaedic Hand Surgeons and 21 Plastic Reconstructive Surgeons.  This is one of the few Hand- reconstructive centres were collaboration between Orthopaedic and Plastic provide patients with the best of both worlds and provide unique training experience for our fellows.

About the Role

To provide specialist Ortho Hand Surgical care and support to the population of Auckland and Northland DHBs

To provide clinical consultation with those patients identified as requiring specialist assessment and management

and ensure that care is provided to patients through a coordinated continuum of care 

To promote best practice management in Hand Surgery by providing safe and efficient clinical services 

To review, develop and implement professional medical standards of Hand Surgical practice and competence 

To deliver on the service’s required outcomes through the active engagement in the clinical partnership model with the Clinical Head

To participate in teaching and learning programmes for medical and non-medical health professionals at both undergraduate and post graduate levels. We are currently accredited for 2 Ortho Hand SET trainees and 1 Plastic SET trainee in the Hand team, and usually have another Plastic Surgery trained Hand fellow, Ortho Trained Hand fellow and a Junior trainee. 

About the Team/Service/ Location

Acute services are predominantly provided at Middlemore and Manukau Health Park support our elective operating and outpatient clinics.  We have a dedicated Local theatre suite that support most of our local Carpal Tunnel procedures.

About you

·       Medical Officer with NZMC vocational registration as a specialist in Orthopaedic Surgery if this is an Ortho Hand role and Vocational Registration as a Specialist in Plastic Surgery if this is for the Plastic Surgery roles

·      Proven ability to initiate and manage change

·      Proven ability to lead a group of people to meet agreed goals

·      Proven ability to manage conflict

·      Proven ability to meet timeframes

·     Proven ability to communicate effectively through both written and oral communication, including formal presentations

·     Proven ability to give constructive criticism to other medical staff in relation to performance when needed.

·     Proven ability to develop the potential of others

·     Ability to operate in a team environment 

·    Personal sincerity and integrity

·    Demonstrable commitment to the service values.

·    High levels of initiative and motivation, and a willingness to generate quality outputs.

·    Speaks and write effectively getting the message across, according to the needs of different people.

·     Evidence of previous successful research activity

Clinical supervision is defined in the broadest sense as general oversight of clinical activities which may include but not be limited to:

  • Oversight of clinical activities
  • Direct supervision of clinical care 
  • Participation in case review and referral meetings
  • Availability for consultation with other staff
  • Allocation and review of referrals
  • Consulting with other specialists
  • Supervision of follow-up programmes

The consultant will be accountable for clinical decisions relating to treatment programmes, oversight and review of clinical activities, effective liaison with other treatment staff, use of resources within agreed protocols and guidelines, decisions concerning transfers, ensuring that an appropriate care programme is in place.

The consultant is accountable for ensuring that clinical sessions start on time.

There will be a contribution to the general and ongoing professional development of all clinical staff within service-based activities.
